Backyard Birds

Who is in your backyard?

Picture
Colorful Birds and Joyful Chirps
Backyard birds bring color and music to everyday moments, turning even the quietest corners into lively stages of nature’s performance. Flashes of red from a cardinal, the sunny yellow of a warbler, or the iridescent shimmer of a hummingbird’s wings catch the eye. Their songs—chirps, trills, and melodic calls—fill the air with joy, from the gentle cooing of doves at dawn to the cheerful chatter of chickadees and wrens throughout the day. Whether flitting between feeders or rustling in the branches, these feathered visitors bring a sense of wonder and connection, reminding us that even the smallest creatures can brighten the world around us.

Spoonbills

Pink Paradise
There’s something truly enchanting about catching sight of a roseate spoonbill, its feathers a brilliant splash of pink against the muted greens and blues of the wetlands. Their vivid plumage, ranging from soft blush to deep magenta, glows in the sunlight, making them one of the most striking wading birds you’ll encounter.

As they move gracefully through shallow waters, their long, flat spoon-shaped bills sweep from side to side in a steady, rhythmic motion. This unique foraging technique allows them to stir up the muddy bottom, straining the water for tiny fish, crustaceans, and insects. It’s a mesmerizing sight to watch a slow, deliberate dance of survival, as they circle through the shallows, creating ripples that shimmer and catch the fading light.

With each step, they seem almost choreographed, like performers on nature’s stage, elegantly sweeping their bills through the water as if practicing a timeless ritual. To witness them feeding is not just to observe a bird, but to glimpse a graceful moment of wild artistry—delicate, deliberate, and quietly spectacular.

Yellow Crowned Night Herons

Picture
Nightly Neighbors
As the sun begins to set, a flock of yellow-crested night herons emerges, darting and pausing across the landscape in search of insects and other delicacies. With their black facial markings and brilliant blue plumage, they resemble masked bandits slipping through the twilight. But it’s the elegant curve of the long white feather trailing behind that truly sets them apart.

High in the trees, their rookery comes into view—a bustling colony where they raise their young together in a tightly knit community.

When dawn breaks, the scene shifts. The herons, one by one, retreat to the safety of their nests, vanishing into the canopy as the first light spills across the sky.
